2026 US Open App First Look: Can AI Make a Busy Tournament Easier to Follow?
The 2026 US Open digital experience is adding new AI-powered tools intended to help fans follow a crowded tournament without losing the matches and players they care about most.
What happened
IBM and the USTA introduced a personalized Live Updates homepage that lets users prioritize favorite players. A new Serve Quality metric analyzes 21 data points across the body and racquet at 50 samples per second, generating near-real-time scores for efficiency, accuracy, consistency and ball toss. The tools are available through USOpen.org and the official app during the tournament.
Why it matters
Tennis creates a difficult information problem: many matches occur simultaneously, and conventional scoreboards do not explain why a player’s serve is effective. Personalization can reduce noise, while the serve metric may turn complex movement data into an accessible viewing aid. The risk is false precision. A single score should support observation, not replace context about pressure, opponent quality and match conditions.
What to watch next
The real test is speed, clarity and trust during live play. Fans should be able to understand why a score changes and move easily from a notification to the relevant match.
